Urban Design Thinking - the Method

Urban Design Thinking forms the methodological framework for our student master projects "Designing Smart Cities". Starting point is the approach of Design Thinking, which is transferred to urban challenges and contexts and hence constantly further developed. Urban Design Thinking enables to adress complex problems collaboratively and creatively through an innovative and user-centered approach, taking into account spatial aspects and local stakeholders.

Like classic Design Thinking, the method consists of a series of steps aiming at researching and materializing meaningful and innovative solutions based on users' needs and specific contexts. The design of the solution results from an iterative process that involves both analytical and intuitive thinking to identify challenges and action areas, generate divergent ideas, and make convergent decisions based on test cycles.
