Qualification Objectives

The module "Multinational Corporations and Corporate Control" aims at introducing the students to multilayered causes and consequences of internationalization and globalization of business activity of enterprises. Besides a critical consideration of these causes and consequences, they should understand and discuss theoretical concepts that explain international business activity.

Further information about requirements for course enrolment, group formation, and exam registration will be provided during the introductory lecture.

Content of Teaching

Within the part of lecture "Theories of the multinational corporation", initially there will be given an overview about the phenomenon of internationalization and globalization. Succeeding, theories of internationalization will be processed; the spectrum ranges from the theory of imperialism via macro- and regional economic as well as industry oriented approaches to company- transaction- and behavioral oriented theoretical approaches. In addition the lectures introduce the culture-related aspects of international management, discusses topics of ‘regionalization’ and ‘globalization’ and selected aspects like Ghemawats concept of ‘Semiglobalisation’ and Prahalads concept of ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’.

The part of lecture "Corporate Control" pursues to questions like: What are suitable performance indicators to steer multinational enterprises? How can planning and budgeting of different business units and regions be synchronized? How can multinaltional enterprises identify and manage risk. What are examples of successful management systems of multinational firms?

Forms of Teaching

The course consists of lecture parts, workshops and presentations of external experts. Moreover, students will be working in groups, presenting their results in the plenary and participate in discussions with external experts.
