Designing Smart Cities: Creative Ideas for Urban Challenges

Winter Semester 2014/15: Approaches to link mobility services

In the second year of the interdisciplinary Designing Smart Cities projects, the linking of mobility services is dared.

Among other German cities, Berlin is predicted to increase in inhabitants in the future. About 280.000 people (Berliner Senat 2012) are expected to move to Berlin until 2030. This on the one hand will be positive for a flourishing economy and to avert the proceeding demographic change, but will on the other hand put extreme pressure and demands on the city infrastructure.

Since intermodal hubs like train stations will become more and more important in future urban environments, the project focused on Südkreuz station and its surroundings as a research area. Südkreuz station connects long distance trains and local public transport in the district of Schöneberg in the south-west of Berlin.

Serving as a major local and supra regional hub Südkreuz will be transformed into an intelligent intermodal mobility station in the future. Regarding to the concept of the Smart City Berlin with an efficient infrastructure, environmental friendly mobility, an information network and creativity, a high productivity should be combined with a high quality of living.


How to enhance the Berlin Südkreuz station to improve user‘s mobility and community experience.

To find answers to that question, four project teams were formed. The main difficulty for the implementation of the project was the cooperation with the various project partners.


The project was supported by the companies Siemens, Deutsche Bahn and the Innovation Center for Mobility and Societal Change (InnoZ), who were partly already involved in the ongoing process of transforming Südkreuz into a future mobility hub, providing orientation and helpful information about the potential for development from Südkreuz and its surroundings during the whole process.

We thank all private and public partners for their support!




In all four projects, intelligent, energy-efficient and at the same time sustainable solutions, such as strategic services and systems, in particular business models, were designed to link intermodal solutions in the urban area.
