Designing Smart Cities: Creative Ideas for Urban Challenges

Winter Semester 2015/16: Approaches to the interaction between residents

In the third year of the interdisciplinary Designing Smart Cities projects, the interaction between residents was dared.

The campus Lichterfelde should become more lively by the long-term transformation, so that young and old people feel comfortable. All existing buildings needed modernization, since they have not been completely renovated since their construction.

The energetic renewal process was in full swing. However, in the first renovation round, numerous problems arose which were not only technical but also of social origin. Not all residents were enthusiastic about the plans. Despite efforts by the Housing Cooperative to involve them in the process through information sessions and more intensive contact, many were not only concerned about rent increases, but about changes in general.

Also, the housing cooperative could not take into account all the wishes of the residents. The removal process caused physical and mental stress, especially for the elderly. Through the renewal process, the administration also realized that there is more mutual support among the residents in other residential areas of the Housing Cooperative.

How can we transform the Lichterfelde Süd campus that socially accepted, energy-efficient and intergenerational living can become reality and the environment evolve into an open and dynamic environment for all generations?

In this case, no classic product intended for sale should be developed. Rather, it is about solutions for a unique community that has grown over generations and is anchored in this special place.

For this project our practice partners were Mr. Lausch and Mrs. Klimt from the Berlin housing cooperative Märkische Scholle, which supported us with active cooperation continuously. At the same time, the residents, who have always taken time for the students, have introduced themselves as contact persons in this project.

We thank all private and public partners for their support!

In the spirit of the task and future of cities, students set about developing ways to transform the campus in a smart way.

It was not just about the technical aspects of modernization, but about finding ways for residents to live, communicate and create social networks.
